January Is Flying By!

Here's what we've been doing since we came back from winter break. First up is our New Year's resolutions. We reviewed what a resolution was, brainstormed some goals for this year, said what we needed to do to achieve our goal, and told if anyone was going to help us.

Last week, we read tons of stories about Martin Luther King, Jr. The students were really interested in learning about him and had lots of questions. I had the students write some important facts about MLK, and then had them complete the TLC-inspired portrait of him. I always love how each one looks slightly different than the rest. The mustaches always get me!

Another activity we did was read the story, The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. We used lots of different skills while reading this book, including making predictions, inferring, and using our schema. After we finished reading the book, we wrote an ending to the story about what Peter and his friend did after the story was over.

I looooove how they turned out! I used the snowsuit patterns from The Snowy Day unit from  The Chalk Talk blog. You can find the patterns for free here. The writing part was from Finally in First . You can find the writing sheet here.
